I've had a few more pieces published since I've last signed onto Blogger. My "Street Trash Innocence" poem is featured on the Circa Review, paired with a vintage photo of two topless women (unbeknownst to me at the time of publication). And I have a collage paired with a little essay/prose piece I wrote, "The Traveler/Urban Traveler," published on Shuf Poetry.

I've also written about the upcoming Williamsburg Fashion Weekend on Examiner.com.

I've been a little careless with keeping up with my writing and art this summer (and I was so ambitious!!), but now that I am back from travels and back to somewhat of a routine, I am returning my creative pursuits, hopefully with a vengeance. Someone even recently brought a print of my artwork on Imagekind. So things are slowly happening for me. It's a hard knock life trying to make a living with
one's art in NYC!

                                              

Coney Island Mermaid Parade 2012

The Coney Island Mermaid Parade this weekend was a blazing spectacle, complete with people in various stages of costumes, dress and undress.

Lots of water, sunscreen, and energy to brave through the crowds were all essential for the day of wackiness in the sun. I sighted everything from pink- and red-haired little girls to women ice skating on a parade float to a pole dancer, to the deranged clown in the bar.

 

 

 To get out of the crowd for a bit, I also stopped into Ruby's Bar on the boardwalk, which had a bar outside in addition to the primary one inside. It was also a great place to use the restrooms and get some respite from the sun. The place was not so crowded - or stressful - compared to the moving masses on the boardwalk. I sighted the deranged clown here.

Coney Island Mermaid Parade

The mermaid parade was a terrifically crowded celebration of everything nautical, and then some, in true Coney Island fashion.

Christmas Cheer in Williamsburg!

So I missed the Santacon barcrawl/party this Saturday, but in honor of both having recovered from a cold and having an old friend in town, I went out this weekend and had my fair share of holiday cheer.

The weekend started off on Friday at Happy Ending, my favorite LES dance bar, which fully lived up to its reputation. And Saturday we kept it local, even though, as my friend remarked, as Brooklyn seems to be getting trendier, perhaps "Manhattan is the new Brooklyn" in terms of weekend parties.

But I ended up Saturday at Whiskey Town, which apparently started in the East Village but is now open right on Berry Street in Williamsburg. And we danced the night away with Santas.

This Week in North Brooklyn Wanderings...

And the week isn't even over yet!

So last night, after I finished working late tutoring, my friend called me and asked if I was going to Drink n' Draw at 3rd Ward. I'd forgotten he was planning on going, but as I didn't have any plans, there I was 20 minutes later, along with another mutual friend.

As always, it was a fun, pleasant time, with plenty of drawing and drinking PBR. Even the model partook in the beer-drinking.

After 3rd Ward, my two friends and I stopped for a drink at Tandem Bar, another Bushwick restaurant and bar I have just discovered.

I'll have to return here for both the food and the reputed dance parties...

Then this afternoon, I discovered that a little chic grocery in Greenpoint is also a wi-fi cafe. And serves breakfast all day. And doesn't get exceptionally crowded. I'm in love. Urban Rustic, I will be coming back to you!

After a delicious brunch, class prep and tutoring, I made it tonight to the City Reliquary's "Thurd THursday" Show n' Tell night of collectors' items. The evening featured such showcased items as border patrol dog trading cards, paperclip sculptures made by a dog, an old top hat box in remarkably good condition that originally belonged to James G. Gould, and a device specifically made to slice English muffins. I'd brought my NYC 70's Flashmaps book with me, but chickened out when I decided I didn't have enough of a story on it. Oh well, maybe next time: the evening will be curated once a month, so stay tuned!

And finally, tomorrow holds many more Brooklyn promises to come. Hello, Goods' Beer, Wine & Heat Party and a crazy, semi-private on-the-down-low Thanksgiving-themed E. Williamsburg/Bushwick party!

City Reliquary's "Thurd THursday": Show and Tell Open Mic

For November’s Thurd THursday, the City Reliquary is returning to its roots – to the central reason it exists and the core of its mission – sharing stories behind collections! Due to the overwhelming success of Return of Collector’s Night at the Knitting Factory on October 11th, with over 200 people admiring the collections of a dozen avid New Yorkers, the City Reliquary Museum and Civic Organization is dedicating its November’s Thurd THursday to a Show and Tell Open Mic. Every object tells a story.

Hosted by minutiae-centric journalist Paul Lukas (whose past showing and telling at the City Reliquary has included an exhibition of his vintage recipe booklets with the word "Meat" in the title,) the Show and Tell Open Mic will be an evening dedicated to YOU and YOUR favorite item. Not a collector? That’s okay! We’re more interested in the Showing and Telling of stuff than the collections they come from. Bring your favorite thing and Show and Tell its stories at the CR on Thursday November 18th. Show us why its your favorite; Tell us where you obtained it and whether or not it comes from a larger collection of items just like it. Prospect Heights Bars: Weather Up and Soda

So I rode my bike to Prospect Heights last night and checked out a few bars on Vanderbilt Ave. I definitely want to come back to this hood and explore it more!!

The first place I went to was Weather Up, a speak-easy type bar with fancy cocktails and a beautiful outdoor patio. Little did we know that the bar was closed for a private event; but with the tip from the doorman, all we had to do was go across the street to Brooklyn Bike and Board and get stamped. Apparently this was the after party of the opening reception of the Re: Cycles show for Martinez Gallery. Pretty awesome. So we crashed a little biking & boarding party, but at least I did actually bike there!

Then, after we finished our drinks, a Planter's Punch and a Gentleman's Companion, both as deliciously head-spinning as they sound, we strolled to Soda Bar. Soda Bar is one of those bars where you feel like you are in your living room, or perhaps an adult version of the dorm room... Literally, you feel right at home there, with its comfy couches and chill vibe, this is a perfect neighborhood bar to unwind at with drinks and good company.

Oh Brooklyn.

Dram: Cocktails in S. Williamsburg

Another swanky bar in my part of Brooklyn! Only a few blocks from me, Dram is a stunning mellow bar in Williamsburg featuring premium top-notch cocktails and an unobstructed view of the street.

The place is rustic chic, with the solid wood paneling of the bar, tables and bathroom nicely complemented by the exposed brick of the outer wall.









At 177 S. 4th St, the bar is almost hidden; well, it's visible, but with no name on announcing its identity on the outside, it's one of those places you don't really feel truly comfortable entering until you know about it. Consider yourself informed.

Time to Draw: Drink 'n Draw at 3rd Ward Tonight!

After my whirlwind Columbus Day weekend of seeing lots of art and dancing the night away at Bowie Ball, I am eager for a more mellow, relaxing sort of activity. Which is why 3rd Ward's weekly Wednesday Drink 'n Draw is so appealing. At only $10 a head (with a friend) for two and a half hours of drawing space, with a figure model and beer provided, it seems like a steal to me. And the perfect opportunity for a little inebriated drawing marathon.

Dance Your Bass Off Tonight!

I am going to this event, Dance Your Bass Off, at Union Pool.

Union Pool is seriously one of my favorite neighborhood bars. It is literally the equivalent of at least 3 bars in one, with its front room (featuring a DJ booth, a photo booth, large booths for seating, and frenetic dancing when the time is right), a sprawling, enclosed outside area (with a taco truck!) and a second, swanky bar where bands play, entered via the back, outside area of the bar.

I am sure I have seen Hungry March Band at least once, though I believe it was years ago at Issue Project Room. Regardless, I expect nothing less than a spectacle tonight, with performance not only by Hungry March Band, but also with Stagger Back Brass Band, a Haitian dance troupe and a dance contest.

According to the Hungry March website,"The best rug-cutter receives free drinks, CD's, VIP UCB Assscat tickets, NY Aquarium tickets, candy, and more more more! All proceeds to benefit a friend with massive hospital bills."

Brooklyn Deliciousness and Debauchery

The storm clouds looming overhead today bring a sense of stillness to the city, the eerie quiet that precedes cleansing storms. It is fitting that the rain has held off until today, Sunday; the crisp, mild Fall weather of Friday and Saturday afforded a thorough enjoyment of the weekend, so that today we can stay out of the rainstorms and recuperate, indoors and cozy, free of guilt from not being outside.

Friday, I discovered Roberta's, a charming restaurant/pizzeria tucked into a quiet street in Bushwick. I am already planning on shortly returning to sample more of the deliciousness! After enjoying salad, cuttlefish and wine (yes, I had a glass! cheers to moderation...), I proceeded with my friend to Kings County Bar, a small hipster bar around the corner, in Bushwick/East Williamsburg. Sipping on my seltzer and lime, I sat outside with my friend in the lovely enclosed backyard area, listening to her stories of the bar's Saturday night frenzied crowd. Apparently Saturdays is a wild ruckus of a dance party and even has go-go dancers!

I may return there for less sober times in the future. But Friday night, after saying good-night to my friend, I departed to meet up in Greepoint. Here I discovered yet another place new to me, the Manhattan Inn, a confusingly named piano bar/jazz lounge/eatery in Greenpoint. I have to come back here as well!

All of this fun with only one glass of wine and good company!

Saturday, refreshingly not hungover, I embarked on a new adventure: BBQ party in Bushwick, celebrating my friend's birthday, mingling, and then biking and dancing galore. I have to say, I love, love love love small private outdoor parties! There is nothing better than a garden BBQ party in lovely crisp Fall weather, with good company, good food, and good music. I am excited about getting to know friends of friends better and delighted that NYC is opening up this way to me, with its hidden gardens and parties.

And then, I biked all the way to the Gowanus, from Bushwick, to the Bell House. I vaguely knew the way, vaguely got lost, and then seemingly magically arrived shortly before midnight, in time to pay the reduced entry for the Cheryl dance party. With a 7-11 costume theme, a free table to decorate yourself and thumping electro music, the party was truly jumping.

It was such an enthusiastic, visually fascinating crowd that I didn't even crave a drink. (And I was already good to go, with sangria from the BBQ party.) I even made it home on my bike before 2:30 a.m. Party pics below (which don't even do justice to the costumes or party).



And, today, there is a block party in Bushwick!! I wonder if it's rain or shine... Highlights include food from Roberta's and some great free music... !

So yesterday night, after a teaching extravaganza of a day, I ended up at the new Knitting Factory, which is now in my neighborhood: Williamsburg, Brooklyn. And the best thing was that it happened to be Moisturizer's last show. (My friend wanted me to come, hearing that Moisturizer was legendary, while I hadn't ever heard buzz on them, except I had happened to catch them at Zebulon the other week!) I didn't even know what show I was going to see when I agreed to check out the Knitting Factory last night. So I just so happened to see Moisturizer twice, and each time was incredible: with their psychedelic/jazz/funk sound, they definitely imbue a certain sense of sexy magic into the evening.

And tonight I am going to see Punk Princess, an off-Broadway show about a blue-blooded Londoner girl who escapes to NYC to make it into the punk scene. Good times.

BLONDIE - Playing FREE Tonight at Coney Island!

And speaking of free things to do in the city, Blondie is playing for free tonight at Coney Island, along with Pat Benatar and The Donnas. The show starts at 7:30 pm... what time Blondie will go on is anyone's guess, but my hunch is probably closer to 10 pm or later...
